Holistic Health is the concept that your body, mind and spirit are connected and that they all factor equally into your overall wellness.
Holistic Health as a phrase, was formed from the word ‘holism’, first coined by Jan Christiann Smuts (statesman, philosopher, naturalist) 100 years ago, to mean that, in nature the tendency is to form ‘wholes’, which in their formation become greater than and different from the sum of their parts.
Nature is earth, water, fire, air and ether (ether: read void). Our bodies are the same. And when one component is out of balance, Nature, as well as each of us, laments. If our spirit is tired, our emotions are negative, or our mind is stressed, our body (the house of mind and spirit) in turn is thrown out of whack, and unwellness begins to permeate our being.
Holistic Health is about maximizing energy, zest for life, and sense of wellbeing. This can be a little different for each of us, but overall is made up of: nutrients (via food and air), exercise, sleep, environment, sunshine, attitude and joy.
This may sound like a lot, but I think Holistic Health can really be made as easy as ABC…
- A is accepting what you cannot change.
- B is for berries, chock full of antioxidants (the good guys that look after your immune system).
- C is for compassion ~ for self as well as others.
- D is for dandelion tea (which keeps your liver in good health).
E is for exercise ~ there is no health without movement. - F is for forgiveness ~ for your sake more than anybody else’s, grudges are exhausting.
- G is for GreenWitch Tea(1) ~ organic green tea, full of polyphenols & all manner of health benefits(2).
- H is for humour ~ laughter really is the best medicine.
- I is for Inca berries, loaded with vitamins and minerals, including A, C and iron.
- J is joy; what is a day without joy; the joy of a hug, feeling your body move, watching a butterfly flit past or enjoying a beautiful sunset.
- K is for kindness; and sprinkling it around like confetti; it feels as good to the sprinkler as it does to the receiver.
- L is for lemon juice, in room temperature water first thing in the morning, it’s a mini cleanse that kick starts your day every time you do it.
- M is for meditation ~ even five minutes (but 20 is better) will relax your muscles, de-stress your mind, and calm your spirit.
- N is for nature; you are her, and she is you, you need to connect with her in some way every day.
- O is for optimism and doing all you can to approach life with a positive attitude.
- P is for pilates, and everything else that helps keep your core strong.
- Q is for quinoa (often thought of as a grain, but it’s actually a seed), one of the few seeds that contain ALL of the essential amino acids.
- R is for resilience ~ your ability to bounce back after something challenging.
- S is for sunshine ~ natural Vitamin D which helps to keep your hormonal system in balance and your bones strong.
- T is turmeric~ which stops inflammation (the precursor of disease).
- U is for understanding ~ that you are allowed to be you, have your own opinions, and make your own choices ~ as is everybody else.
- V is for vegetables ~ and making them the base of your nutrient source. Eat as many colours as you can, a rainbow of veggies every day is perfect.
- W is for water ~ clean, pure water. Your body is about two thirds water, which means you need a minimum (depending on the temperature, your amount of movement, and how much you sweat) of 8 glasses of water per day to keep your body in equilibrium.
- Y is for yoga and everything else that keeps your body flexible.
- Z is for zest, and approaching life with it.
This day, and every day, is waiting for you to fill it with lovely, loving, fun and funny moments. Enjoying your best health gives you the perfect springboard from which to be able to do that. My ABC’s of Holistic Health is just meant to get you started on your own… Enjoy the journey and may your magick serve you well. ~ GreenWitch Tea
